CPV codes — classifying EU contracts

All EU procurement notices use the Common Procurement Vocabulary (CPV) — a classification system of numeric codes for goods, services and works. CPV codes allow cross-border comparison of procurement activity. TenderResults maps CPV codes to readable categories so you can filter by sector without needing to look up codes manually.

EU thresholds for publication on TED

Contracts above the EU procurement thresholds must be published in TED. Current thresholds (2024–2025) are approximately €143,000 for central government goods and services contracts, €221,000 for other public authority contracts, and €5.5 million for public works contracts. All notices meeting these thresholds from all 27 member states appear in TED.

What is TED and where does the EU contract data come from?

TED — Tenders Electronic Daily — is the official supplement to the Official Journal of the European Union dedicated to public procurement. It publishes contract notices, award notices and other procurement-related notices from all 27 EU member states, EEA countries, and some associated territories. TenderResults pulls EU award notice data from the TED API daily.

Does TED still include UK contracts after Brexit?

No. Since 1 January 2021, UK contracting authorities publish on Find a Tender (for above-threshold contracts) and Contracts Finder, not TED. TED no longer includes UK notices. TenderResults uses separate sources for UK contracts (Contracts Finder and Find a Tender) and TED for EU member state contracts — so both are covered.

Can UK companies bid for EU public contracts?

Post-Brexit, UK companies do not have automatic rights to participate in EU public procurement as they did when the UK was an EU member. However, EU procurement directives do not automatically exclude third-country bidders, and many EU authorities welcome competitive bids from international suppliers. The practical ability to bid varies by member state, contract type, and any applicable trade agreements. UK businesses should seek legal advice before bidding for EU contracts.

What are CPV codes and how do I use them to search?

CPV (Common Procurement Vocabulary) codes are the EU's standardised classification system for public contracts. For example, CPV 72000000 covers IT services. Are EU contract award notices published in English?

TED publishes notices in the official language(s) of the issuing country, and key fields are translated into all EU official languages including English. Contract titles, buyer names, and descriptions in TenderResults may appear in the original language for some member states. Award values and supplier names are generally identifiable regardless of language.
